This unit is part of the new Master of Project Management course to be offered from 2018 and introduces students to the principles of managing projects.

Reasons for Change (12 Jul 2018, 09:04am)

20/06/2017: Admin - updating justification of 100% in-semester assessment at the request of the Director of Education Quality.

28/06/2017: Admin - following comments from GPC 3/17, in consultation with the Course Director, updates were made to clarify the Reasons for Introduction, Roles and Relationship and Workload. For more specific information on Workload see documents in GPC 3/17 (Item 6.2) minutes.

Update to assessment to remove reference to how many days the unit will be taught over.

14/08/2017: Admin - on behalf of the CE, removing corequisites to allow students to enrol in the these units on a part-time basis.

18/09/2017: Admin - on behalf of the CE, update the Workload Requirements to define block-mode.

10/10/2017: Admin - on behalf of the CE, adding prohibitions.

24/10/2017: Admin - adding FIT5194 to prohibitions.

19/01/2018: Admin - fixing numbering in learning outcomes and updating Reasons for Change on behalf of the CE - amending learning outcomes to include an outcome that requires students to work in teams. Effective Semester 1, 2018.

14/02/2018: On behalf of CE have added a hurdle requirement to ensure that students participate in the workshops. Effective Semester 1, 2018.

19/06/2018: Admin - updating teaching responsibilities to include MBS and Engineering.

06/07/2018: Contact person has been changed. The contact person is also the chief examiner for the unit. 06/07/2018: The synopsis has been changed to better reflect the actual contents of the unit to give the students realistic expectations.

12/07/2018: Admin - updating assessment so hurdle requirements is consistent with other OPM units, on behalf of the CE. Effective immediately.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (28 Jun 2017, 10:19am)

This unit is one of four foundational units in Part A of the new Master of Project Management course. This Unit has three co-requisites of the other Foundation Units (OPM4001, OPM4002, OPM4003), and develops knowledge at the AQF level 8 for students to then progress to study AQF level 9 Units in Part B. This Unit forms an integral component of the required knowledge to complete the Master of Project Management.

Objectives

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  1. Differentiate and select effective and creative communication methods.
  2. Critically assess project scope, tasks, stakeholders and resources to select and implement appropriate project management tools and techniques.
  3. Formulate effective leadership and management strategies for both teams and stakeholders.
  4. Critique the terminology, tools, techniques, and processes in project management.
  5. Work together in a team and reflect on how the team can improve its performance.

The project management methods, frameworks, and organising principles will be explored through theories and a project. Project management process groups, the different project life cycles, and alternative methodologies will be introduced to demonstrate how projects are managed.

Assessment Summary (12 Jul 2018, 09:05am)

In-semester assessment: 100%

Justification of 100% In-semester assessment - As this unit is taught in block mode it does not fit with the university's official examination period and the nature of the material covered is best assessed by assignments.

Additional pass requirement - students must meet the workshop participation hurdle to pass the unit.

To ensure that the students work is authentic all assignment submissions will pass through the Turnitin checker system to validate the work. Also, academic staff will closely supervise and monitor the students' engagement throughout the semester using electronic portfolios, online forums, and attendance at scheduled online sessions.

Workload Requirements (18 Sep 2017, 11:21am)

Workshop; which comprise lectures and tutorials taught in block-mode*, with up to 140 hours of combined face-to-face time attending workshops and off-campus preparation and assessment work.

*Semester 1 and Semester 2 - block-mode taught over two sets of 2.5 consecutive days.

*Winter and Summer Semester - block-mode taught over five consecutive days.
