Advanced Topics in Electronic Recordkeeping and Archiving is one of the advanced units in the new MIS degree. It will provide IS/IM professionals with the opportunity to pursue studies at an advanced level by addressing a selection of current topical issues and challenges in the field of electronic recordkeeping and archiving through seminars, group project work and engagement with leading practitioners and researchers.

Objectives

At the completion of this subject you should have in-depth knowledge and understanding of:

K1 The major issues and challenges in managing electronic records and archives in contemporary organisations and society.

K2 Strategies for the integrated management of electronic records and archives to ensure the achievement of organisational and social objectives, while managing associated risk.

K3 The major theories, concepts and models associated with the effective management of electronic records and archives and the integration of recordkeeping and archiving with business and societal processes.

K4 The changing nature of recordkeeping and archiving in electronic, networked environments, their relationship to IM/IS/IT policies, strategies and frameworks, and the building of strategic alliances internal and external to the organisation.

K5 The relevance of research and development initiatives to professional practice.

K6 The complexity and challenges associated with selection and evaluation of system and software solutions, project governance, and the delivery of benefits from investments in quality recordkeeping and archiving systems.

P3 Propose solutions and improvements based on analyses of the current situation, relevant theoretical and analytical literature, standards and best practice models, and research and development initiatives.

P4 Develop implementation strategies, involving the application of appropriate tools and techniques, taking into account the relationship between recordkeeping and archiving, and other business and societal processes.

Summary (02 Jun 2004, 4:16pm)

This unit is designed to provide students with an in-depth understanding and knowledge of the role of electronic recordkeeping and archiving in contemporary organisations and society, and exposure to the latest thinking, best practice and research initiatives. Emphasis will be placed on exploring issues, concerns and trends that pose complex challenges relating to the effective management of records and archives in electronic, networked environments. Students will be equipped with understandings, knowledge, strategies, and skills which will enable them to develop and implement effective solutions that meet these challenges. A unit outline detailing the topics to be covered in a specific offering of this unit will be available to students from the unit leader two weeks prior to the commencement of the teaching period.
