Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (04 Sep 2020, 3:55pm)

This unit is a duplicate unit of FIT9137. The ITIxxxx units have been created for the Monash Indonesia offering of the Master of Data Science due to the different teaching mode.

Objectives

Objectives (04 Sep 2020, 3:56pm)

On successful completion of this unit, you should be able to:

  1. examine and describe computer hardware and software architectures;
  2. explain the three major functions of an operating system (OS), namely, process management, memory management, and file management;
  3. describe the underlying fundamental theories, models and protocols for transmitting data across a network;
  4. describe the functions and architectures of local area networks, wide area networks and the Internet;
  5. identify and describe fundamental concepts of network security including common threats and countermeasures;
  6. evaluate several different design options and formulate a simple network design.

Assessment

Assessment Summary (04 Sep 2020, 4:00pm)

Examination: (2 hours and 10 minutes) 50%; In-semester assessment: 50%

In-semester breakdown:

Online Quizzes (8%): Students will be asked to complete online quizzes in Moodle based on the prescribed reading and lecture materials of the previous week.

Lab Assessment Tasks (10%): Students will submit results from three of their lab tasks via a Moodle quiz submission. The tasks will assess the topics of operating systems, network layers, and security.

Assignment 1 (20%): Assignment 1 will include the material covered in Weeks 1 to 6 and consist of two parts. The first part addresses questions related to components of wireless networks, in particular at the physical and data link layers. The second part requires students to write a report on a case study, with questions that focus on network architectures and applications. The format of the student submission will be a written report.

Assignment 2 (12%): Assignment 2 will include the material covered in Weeks 7 to 10. In particular, the assignment will consist of questions related to network and transport layers, structures and functions of local area, backbone and wide area networks, and network security. The format of the student submission will be a written report and a network configuration.

Workloads

Workload Requirements (04 Sep 2020, 3:59pm)

Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:

  1. Contact hours for on-campus students:
    • Two hours of lectures
    • One 2-hour laboratory
  2. Additional requirements (all students):
