Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This unit will be co-taught with IMS2000(BIS) as part of the teaching-out strategy for that unit.

This new unit is a core second year unit in the revised structure for the Bachelor of Information Systems. It incorporates significant components of the content of IMS2000 in the current structure of the BIS. The programming components which were previously taught in this subject have been moved to new programming units, and there is a stronger emphasis on cross-development lifecycle activities such as project management, professional communication and quality, and social implications. The ability to develop working applications and systems, and an understanding of the issues surrounding systems development are of crucial importance to our students. This ability and associated level of understanding represent core 'ammunition in the arsenal' they can use to function well in the roles they will eventually perform in industry. The skills required for systems development are introduced and practiced in the other units of the course, but these skills are often necessarily taught within a limited context. Students also need the opportunity to practice critical self-evaluation and to examine themselves in the context of the teams they work in. This requires analysis of the team and its processes.Studio 3 provides students with an environment where they can integrate and practice the skills gained in other units, and acquire other necessary practical skills in order to create an accurate set of analysis models, documents, and prototypes. These can then be used as the basis for developing one or two core aspects of a working system that will in turn be built upon in second semester unit, Studio 4. The deliverables for this unit will provide the 'blueprint' for the development of a full working system during second semester in Studio 4.
