Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This subject has been running since Summer Semester 1996. This subject proposal is to formalise the offering of the subject annually for Semester 2 and Summer in each year depending on demand. The Reason for Introduction that appeared in the 1996 proposal read as follows:"An alternate paradigm of object-oriented methods has been developing over recent years for the development of computer-based information systems. A variety of approaches and techniques for the conduct of systems analysis and design have been proposed and trialled over recent years, lagging somewhat behind the development of programming languages and techniques. A degree of consensus is being reached among academic and practitioner communities as to the value of many of these proposed techniques.Since the dominant paradigm for information systems development remains that of information engineering, as taught in GCO1813 Information Systems I and GCO2813 Information Systems II, it is appropriate that those subjects retain their present role within current courses. However, familiarity with the new object-oriented paradigm is becoming increasingly significant for both practitioners and academic research. As this alternate paradigm matures and gains marketplace significance, it is imperative that students in computing courses with an information system development focus gain understanding of and competence in its concepts and techniques. The subject is therefore needed in order that the major continues to meet its student objectives in the analysis and design areas."
