Reasons for Change (15 Feb 2021, 10:28am)

17/7/13 Correcting prohibition. Change of location. Additional mode of teaching. Effective Semester 1 2014.

15/08/13 Change the learning objectives to learning outcomes

9/09/13 - On behalf of CE, modified wording of objectives based on advice from Director Education Quality. Amended objectives to comply with AQF requirements.

7/07/2014 - Added FIT5132 as prohibition and Malaysia to locations.

10/08/2015 - Change the exam duration from 2 hours to 3 hours. The change will allow more challenging questions to be asked during the exam to reduce the number of HDs and Ds in the unit. For implementation in semester 1 2016.

12/01/2017 - Change the exam duration from 3 hours to 2 hours with 30 minutes reading time to follow the new university policy regarding exam. For implementation in semester 1 2017.

20/04/2017 - Add ONLINE mode to the unit offering and add the assessment method to be 100% in-semester assessments for the Monash ONLINE delivery. GDDS will offer FIT9132 for the first time in May 2017 term. For the implementation in GDDS' May term.

29/06/2018: Admin - amendment to Assessment removing the 30 minutes reading and noting time and reverting to the standard 10 minutes reading and noting time, as per FEC Email Meeting 1/18.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

FIT9132 is one of the foundation units for the Master of Information Technology and Master of Business Information Systems postgraduate students. It prepares students so that they will understand the theoretical and practical aspects of providing computer solutions to real world problems.

This unit will introduce the concept of data management in an organisation through relational database technology. Theoretical foundation of relational model, analysis and design, implementation of relational database using SQL will be covered.

Prescribed Reading (for new units) (18 Sep 2020, 10:00am)

Students are required to have access to a copy of the textbook Coronel, C., & Morris, Steven, Database Systems: Design, Implementation, and Management (Version 12 or 13 is suitable). Available from Monash Library or to purchase as an as an eBook from http://bit.ly/2NYK937

Technological requirements

On-campus: All students will be required to maintain their unit work on the FIT GitLab server to both provide a secure repository for work completed and to demonstrate a clear development history. Students will be provided with an account on this server.

Monash Online: This unit will make use of the Oracle 12 database running on the Monash server. All students will have an account on this server which will suffice for all database work during semester. All client software required for this unit will be available under the Monash MoVE platform, no local installation of software is required.
