This unit introduces the fundamental systems analysis and design skills necessary to implement information management systems which underpin larger multimedia projects. Students will use entity relationship diagrams and data flow diagrams to model systems, and learn how these diagrams relate to database structures and usage. The unit will introduce programming concepts such as data types, arrays, expressions, control structures, functions and objects as applied to the multimedia scripting environment. Students will also learn to encode information in XML and load it into Flash for display. Coverage of project management will introduce students to tenders, project life cycle, scheduling, intellectual property and contracting.

The unit will provide fundamental systems analysis and design skills which students will be able to apply in larger multimedia projects as they progress through their studies. The unit provides a systems analysis and design context for development work in the area of multimedia.

This unit is delivered as a service taught unit into the Faculty of Art and Designs Master of Multimedia. The unit will also be available as an open postgraduate elective.

At the completion of this unit students will have:

• knowledge of a range of systems analysis and design methodologies and their associated tools that can be used in the development of multimedia systems;
• knowledge of the main participants in the development of multimedia systems and the roles which they perform;
• knowledge of the key tasks in the multimedia systems development process;
• knowledge of quality assurance techniques for the analysis, design, implementation and maintenance of a quality multimedia system;
• an appreciation of the importance of a thorough understanding of the principles of systems analysis and design so as to support successful development of multimedia systems;
• broadminded awareness of the advantages and disadvantages of alternative approaches in systems analysis and design;
• ability to undertake a requirements analysis for a business application;
• ability to convert requirement analysis models to design models that represent a workable solution system;
• ability to prepare analysis and design documentation for a Multimedia System;
• ability to encode data in XML format;
• ability to apply sound programming principles to the use of a multimedia scripting language such as ActionScript;
• ability to develop skills to work as part of a project team.

This unit will examine the activities integral to the development of a multimedia systems, detailing the techniques of systems analysis and design used in the development process. Fundamental programming concepts will be introduced within a multimedia scripting language framework as a mechanism for system development. Students will be involved in a mixture of individual and group-based work which will require application of the theoretical knowledge gained in lectures to a series of practical problems in multimedia systems development.
