FIT5160 Business process modelling, design and simulation (19 Oct 2007, 7:05pm) [ BUS PROC DES ]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (19 Oct 2007, 7:08pm)

A new unit in the Business Systems track of the MBIS course

This unit educates students in sound, scientifically based principles of designing and re-designing business processes. This is directly relevant to organisations making radical changes in their business processes in order to achieve best practice.

Reasons for Change (28 Sep 2020, 3:41pm)

29 Oct 2009 - This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

12 March 2010 - After the introduction of FIT9017 Foundations in Programming as a MBIS foundation unit GPC requested that all units with FIT9004 Computer Programming for Business as a Foundation as a prerequisite be reviewed. As a result of this review FIT9017 has been added to FIT5160 as prerequisite requirements. This amendment can take effect immediately as there is no impact on currently enrolled students.

21 May, 2013 - Revised pre-requisites to cater for transition arrangements in relation to the introduction of the new version of the MBIS in 2014.

18 July 2013 - Amending prerequisites and prohibitions, effective Semester 1 2014.

26 August 2013 - On behalf of CE, restated objectives to learning outcomes to comply with AQF requirements.

10/9/13 - On behalf of CE, modified wording of objectives based on advice from Director Education Quality. Amended objectives to comply with AQF requirements.

22/14 - Change to contact hours made to align with Handbook entry (bulk upload from CUPID extract). Approved by ADE.

24/3/14 - Modified pre-requisite knowledge to allow students with mathematical or quantitative analysis skills to undertake the unit in addition to those with a programming background. While the unit does not require programming knowledge as such, it does require an ability to analyse a problem and think algorithmically. The updated pre-requisites now reflect this. Amendment will allow BusEco students to enrol in FIT5160. Change to take effect in Semester 2,2014.

22/10/2014 - Amended prerequisite requirements by adding 2015, FIT9xxx version of 2014, FIT5xxx foundation units. Approved at GPC 4/14 (Item 6.2).

17/01/2017 - Admin: adding Reason for change and semester of implementation - change to assessment to comply with University assessment policy change. Effective Semester 2, 2017.

12/06/2017: Admin - updating location of offering to reflect actual campus offerings at the ADE's request.

21/08/2018 - Changed workload requirements from "laboratories" to "tutorials" to reflect the nature of the classes and to align with the timetabling terminology.

24/9/2019: Admin - adding 10 minutes to the exam duration as per University requirements.

11/11/2019: Removing disestablished units from, and adding entry into C6007 Master of AI to the prerequisites. Effective 2020.

28/09/2020 - Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:20pm)

Together with FIT5157, FIT5158 and FIT5159, this unit makes up the Business Systems Track in the Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS). Business processes must be designed to ensure that they are effective and meet customer requirements. A well-designed process will improve efficiency and deliver greater productivity. This unit will introduce students to analytical tools that can be used to model, analyse, understand and design business processes. Students will also gain hands-on experience in using simulation software as a tool for analysing business processes.

The goal of the Business Systems professional track is to provide students with essential skills required by the current day business analyst. Depending on their qualifications and experience prior to graduate study and the nature of their elective study, graduates could be employed in a variety of roles ranging from business systems analyst, systems analyst, and functional analyst through to senior management and management advisory roles.

Objectives
