17/7/13 Correcting prohibition. Effective Semester 1 2014.

GPC 3/2014 endorsed changing FIT5134 foundation unit to FIT9134 foundation unit to differentiate the foundation units from the non-foundation units. This change will be reflected in the 3348 - Master of Information Technology; 3342 - Master of Business Information Systems and 4313 - Master of Information Technology Professional/Master of Business Information Systems Professional. FIT5134 will be disestablished at the end of 2014 and FIT9134 will be offered from Semester 1,2015.

09/03/2015 - This unit was a foundation unit in the Masters programs and has been replaced by FIT9134.

FIT5134 is one of the foundation units for the Master of Information Technology postgraduate students. It prepares students so that they will understand the theoretical and practical aspects of providing computer solutions to real world problems.

This unit introduces students to the fundamentals of computer systems and the computing environment, using Linux as a case study of a modern operating system. Topics covered include: CPU, memory, storage devices, peripheral hardware, networking fundamentals, operating systems fundamentals, practical Linux considerations including Desktop and Enterprise applications, file systems, shell scripting, client/server applications and system administration.
