FIT5122 Professional Practice (31 Oct 2012, 09:15am) [PROFESSIONALPRACTICE (31 Oct 2012, 09:16am)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (23 May 2013, 08:02am)

FIT5122 was introduced as a result of the 2012-13 Postgraduate Course Review where a need to further develop professional and communication skills in our IT graduates was identified.

Reasons for Change (07 Jun 2021, 12:24pm)

25/9/2013 - Restated objectives as learning outcomes to comply with AQF requirements.

2/7/2014 - Synopsis and Objectives modified to suit the advanced nature of a postgraduate professional practice unit (prepared by Gail Bourne. Effective Semester 1,2015.

26/07/2014 - modified corequisites to add FIT5104 for MBIS students undertaking a specialisation. Effecitve Semester 1, 2015.

16/02/15 - amended co-requisite requirements for Callista unit rule clarification purposes. Effecitve Semester 1, 2015.

15/07/2015 - I would like to change them so that

  • They are numbered to match with the ACS mapping of objectives
  • the number of them is reduced to fit better with the Acs mapping and
  • they are simpler (but still at aqf 9 level) (the actual meaning to the objectives has not changed) This change is effective as at Semester 2, 2015.
  • 8/1/2016 - Amending pre-requisite to restrict off-campus unit offering to students enrolled in off-campus course mode unless CE approval granted.

02/02/2016 - Admin: inconsistency between "Reasons for Change" and the change in the Pre-req. Amending pre-req to say CE approval is required (rather than unit coordinator)

19/12/2016 - Changed exam length from 3 hour to 2 hours with 30 minutes reading time to conform to new ed. standards.

05/01/2017 - Admin: change effective Semester 1, 2017 (as advised by CE).

12/06/2017 - Admin: updating location of offering to reflect actual campus offerings at the ADE's request.

23/3/18 - Admin: adding Reasons for Change - MBIS Course Director added MGF5991 as a prohibition, as per decision of GPC 1/2018 Item 6.1.

03/07/208 -reason for 3 hour exam - English language skills - high percentage of international students and whether we like it or not , many have problems with the English language.

They may have the adequate knowledge when they arrive, but I am unsure if our course improves that knowledge. Continuing to mix and work with other students of the same nationality may not improve those English language skills.

Our exam has 5 applied questions however our international students need extra time to read and understand meaning. Students with lower English skills find it more difficult to engage with the higher-level language needs for this unit. This is not about grammar, which we ignore as long as there is meaning and understanding in their answering.

If Monash enrols non-native English speakers, then Monash should make some allowance for them to complete the course successfully. Many need the extra time to read, understand and write in English, so less time on thinking an problem solving, which is our main objective.

The FIT51222 exam is about knowledge, understanding and reflection, n0t about how fast the students can put that into words. This exam is not about which students perform better under stress or which have rote learned. This is not what is examined here.

    03/07/2018: Admin - changing CE.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

11/11/2019: Removing FIT5104 and relevant statement from coreqs, as the unit is disestablished. Effective 2020.

22/09/2020 - Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

23/01/2021: CE Changes - update labs to tutorials (confirmed by C.Messom) - have always been tutorials, and claimed by staff as tutorials but mistakenly in handbook as labs. Now need to match new scheduling/HR system.

    01/06/2021: Admin - update CE.

    7/06/2021:

Changes to objectives - the number of them is reduced to fit better with current practice. They still match Acs mapping. The actual meaning of the objectives has not changed).
Changes to synopsis (as above) . The meaning has not changed. Assessment naming changed to be more meaningful - content and value has not changed. Work hours changed to include the extra non staffed hour part of the tutorial (timetabled meeting time). Now there should bw 36 hours of tutorial time per semester in there handbook . to match the timetable (agreed by Chris Messom)

These changes are effective as at Semester 2 2021.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (14 Aug 2014, 08:25am)

FIT5122 is part of the suite of Industry experience units to be introduced in 2015 as part of the reviewed Masters courses. It is designed to ensure students have the skills and knowledge essential to professional practice in the IT industry. It will only be available to Faculty of Information Technology students.

The key ACS Core Body of Knowledge areas covered in this unit include:

    Objectives

    Objectives (07 Jun 2021, 12:15pm)

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

    1. Research, critically evaluate and apply appropriate strategies and innovative methods for effective and efficient communications across all stakeholders, evaluating their appropriateness for intercultural communications.

    Synopsis (07 Jun 2021, 12:16pm)

The Professional Practice unit enables students to build and improve on the professional skills needed to succeed as an IT Professional. Students will explore a range of theoretical and practical skills including complex communication and conflict resolution skills; high performing team attributes in a positive environment; cross cultural skills; skills to navigate ethical challenges related to technology and the role of professional associations. Through a combination of enquiry based self-research, facilitated discussion and practical assignments, students will gain an understanding of the underlying theories and strategies to help them more effectively apply these skills to situations faced in the workplace. As part of this journey, students will also have the opportunity to reflect on and improve their existing professional skills by exploring how they do things, reflecting on whether best practices are being applied and evaluating how they could continue to improve.

Study in FIT5122 supports study in FIT5120, therefore students should enrol in FIT5122 in conjunction with FIT5120 where possible.
