Unit Code, Name, Abbreviation

FIT5106 Information organisation (17 Apr 2007, 12:36pm) [INFO ORG (17 Apr 2007, 12:36pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

The unit is consistent with the demands from the profession and the workplace for students able to demonstrate an understanding of the principles and practices applied by libraries and information services in organising information resources for effective storage and retrieval.

Reasons for Introduction (25 Nov 2007, 6:37pm)

The unit is core to the Library, Archival and Recordkeeping Systems professional track in the MIMS (up to 2008), and the MBIS (from 2009), for those who seek professional recognition with the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). It is also core to the library stream of the Grad. Dip. IKM, which is also accredited by ALIA. It provides students with the skills and knowledge to organise information resources for effective retrieval.

Reasons for Change (14 Jul 2021, 12:11pm)

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

22/1/2014 - Change to contact hours made to align with Handbook entry (bulk upload from CUPID extract). Approved by ADE.

18/4/2014 - modified Unit Objectives to Learning Outcomes to comply with AQF.

23/3/2017 - Assessment details changed (exam reduced from 3 hours to 2 hours) to bring into line with university policy.

1/06/2017 - Updating exam hours from 3 to 2 hours as required by new University Examination procedures, effective S1 2018.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

09/10/2020 Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

09/12/2020 Updating learning outcomes to ensure relevance to current environment and MBIS student cohort, and to remove those dependent on Monash Library resourcing which is no longer available.

15/12/2020 Admin: updated Assessments to include mapping to ULOs.

16/12/2020 Admin: fixed issue with mappings and numbered learning outcomes.

13/05/2021 - Admin: Updated CE. Adding reasons for change - CE noted change from laboratory to tutorial time to better reflect the unit-related classroom activities and discussion

13/07/21 - Assessment. The CE believes the metadata assignment is weighted too heavily, so wishes to reduce this from 25 to 20% while adding a Class participation assignment for Weeks 3 to 12 of 5%.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:19pm)

This is a core unit in the Library, Archival and Recordkeeping Systems Professional track in the Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) from 2009 for those who seek professional recognition with the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). It is also core to the library stream of the Graduate Diploma Information Knowledge Management (IKM), which is also accredited by ALIA. It provides students with the skills and knowledge to organise information resources for effective retrieval. This unit is co-taught with FIT3125 Information Organisation.

Synopsis (29 Oct 2009, 6:19pm)

This unit develops understanding of the fundamental principles, concepts and standards that guide the development of information organisation and retrieval systems and web-based information architectures. It deals with standards governing description, distribution and access to information locally and globally cataloguing, indexing, thesaurus construction, classification and metadata for knowledge discovery. It examines the effects of economic, social and technological factors on the development of bibliographic networks and cataloguing operations. Practical sessions deal with the use of major bibliographic tools, schemes and systems for information organisation.
