FIT5104 Information and Knowledge Management Professional Practice - Disestablished (19 Nov 2020, 1:02pm) [IKM PROF PRAC (04 Sep 2014, 5:06pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

The unit is consistent with the demands from the professions and the workplace for students to be able to demonstrate practical experience in their chosen professional field. The subject enables students to apply information management and systems theories to a practical context, and provides exposure to current practice. Fieldwork is the major component of the subject and, as such, contributes to the objective of meeting course recognition requirements of the Australian Library and Information Association and the Australian Society of Archivists and other relevant professional bodies as appropriate. Work experience assists students in their careers.

Reasons for Introduction (18 Apr 2007, 9:14pm)

The unit is a requirement for professional accreditation, and introduces students to a range of professional issues in which they need to be informed before they become information professionals.

Reasons for Change (19 Nov 2020, 1:02pm)

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

Change of assessment from Examination (50%) to Professional Practice Research Project (50%) as per 2011 Examiner's Report and formal and informal feedback from students as to the inappropriateness of an exam for assessing the level of achievement of the unit's learning objectives. Change to be implemented from Semester 2, 2012.

Above change was made on 18 April 2012. At that time other changes were made by mistake - the following assessments:Presentation (25%); Participation in Seminar and Discussion Forum (25%) were replaced with: Presentation (20%) and Report on Fieldwork Placement (30%). This was a reversion to an earlier iteration of assessment statement. The change made on 23 June 2012 is not a major change - it is a correction of a mistake.

2/12/2013 - modified Prerequisites/PreReqUnits to ensure that students do not undertake this unit before they are ready to do so. For implementation in Semester 1, 2014.

21-22/8/2014 - name change to distinguish from FIT5122 (IT) Professional Practice; addition of communication and collaboration learning outcome; amendment of practical experience learning outcome

4/9/2014 - Title and Abbreviation changed to Practice as per Special FEC meeting 1/9/2014

11/07/2017- These changes to be effective for semester 2, 2017

  • outcomes changed to match FIT5122 outcomes (now co-taught) and adding one extra outcome to cover library placement {\item Synopsis changed to include professional Placement {\item Assessment summary to match most FIT5122 assessments changing two assessments needed for placement and specialisation requirements.
  • Workload to fit new requirements, in order that 5104 and 5122 can be co -taught: Students exiting with MBS taking 5104 will use meeting time to apply professional practice to team industry experience projects; Students exiting with GDIKM will use meeting time to work on team specialisation research and presentations
  • 12/07/2017: Admin - update CE.

    12/07/2017: Assessment changed in order that now 100% in-semester assessment (exam taken out). To be effective from semester 2 2017

    11/2/2018: Hurdle added - Organisation Placement added as a hurdle. It is and always was a hurdle but was not defined as such. 5104 cannot be passed without taking the placement. To be effective semester 1 2018.

    19/11/2020: Admin - this unit was disestablished at FEC 5/20 on 12/11/2020 as it is no longer required.

    Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (26 May 2011, 1:26pm)

    This is a core unit in the Library, Archival and Recordkeeping Systems Professional track in the Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) from 2009 for those who seek professional recognition with the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA), the Records and Information Management (RIM) Professional Association of Australia or the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA).

    It is also core to the library and recordkeeping and archiving streams of the Graduate Diploma Information Knowledge Management (IKM), which is also accredited by these professional bodies. It provides for the professional experience and professional issues components, which are essential for professional recognition. This unit should be taken in the latter part of a student's course, after they have passed the core units of their professional track (i.e. those units that form the basis of professional recognition with the relevant professional association). This unit is co-taught with FIT3124 Professional Practice.

    This unit introduces the student to the practical environment in which the theory of information management and systems is applied, and helps prepare students for entry into the professional workplace. It links the theoretical concepts of information management, knowledge management and systems to professional practice in the workplace. Students will gain an awareness of the literature of their specialisation and an understanding of professional issues relating to that field, including the role of professional associations. The unit introduces the student to the world of work and career opportunities in the information market. Through the fieldwork placement, which is the major component of the unit, students gain a good understanding of the role of information agencies and the environment in which they operate. One further aim of this unit is to make students aware of the key issues in information management and information systems currently identified by practitioners, managers, researchers, organisations, and academics, as being of professional concern.

    Objectives

    Objectives (11 Jul 2017, 12:45pm)

    On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

  • compare and contrast IT professional roles, assessing the necessity and rationale for constant review and change;
  • identify and analyse the ethical dimensions associated with IT-related decisions, use and quality and their possible impacts on organisations and society;
  • reflect on and analyse the need for IT professional associations and the need for codes of ethics (including the ACS) in IT development and use;
  • research, select and apply strategies, protocols and innovative methods for effective and efficient communications across all stakeholders, evaluating their appropriateness for intercultural communications;
  • appraise and justify various teamwork skills for various situations, demonstrating the ability to apply them by working cooperatively and managing conflict within their team;
  • develop and apply appropriate information gathering, critical evaluation (information and its sources) and problem solving skills;
  • evaluate, assess and communicate both personal and team progress and learning, thus engaging in meaningful reflective practice.
  • apply theories and practice of selected specialisation to the workplace.
