Unit Code, Name, Abbreviation

FIT5102 IT strategy and governance (03 Jul 2007, 12:28pm) [ IT STRAT & GOV (29 Oct 2009, 6:19pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (14 Oct 2007, 3:34pm)

With the course changes associated with the development of the MBIS for 2009, and consequent revision of the MIMS professional tracks for 2008, there has been a rearrangement of content for the information and knowledge management units, and deletion of some units. FIT5102 has been developed to substitute for some previous content within the information and knowledge management graduate programs. It forms one of the units needed for professional recognition purposes with ALIA, RMAA and ASA, and is part of the Grad. Dip.IKM course, as well as the Corporate Information and Knowledge Management professional track of the MIMS program. Additionally, it is being offered as an elective within the MIMS and MBusSys programs for 2008 and for the MBIS and Master of Business (IT Management) from 2009.

Reasons for Change (16 Jul 2021, 8:03pm)

21 May, 2013 - Revised pre-requisites to cater for transition arrangements in relation to the introduction of the new version of the MBIS in 2014.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

18/7/13 Removing prerequisites. Effective Semester 1 2014.

10/09/13 - On behalf of CE, modified wording of objectives based on advice from Director Education Quality. Amended objectives to comply with AQF requirements.

12/04/2017 - Change exam duration from 3 hours to 2 hours to conform with university policy

22/08/2019 - Change practical session to be tutorials rather than labs. This is more suitable to the current teaching method to lead to the appropriate learning outcomes

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

9/6/2020 - Adding reason for change on behalf of CE, for implementation S2, 2020. The change in FIT5102 assessment weighting is related to the change of the format of the exam to the open book, take home exam. In this situation I believe the assessment proportion should not be equal to the one based on more substantial individual work.

09/10/2020 Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

16/07/2021 Matt: Update CE for this unit based on information from the AAD (Academic Allocation Database)

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:19pm)

This unit is core in the Corporate Information and Knowledge Management Professional track unit in the Master of Information Management Systems (MIMS) and the Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS). It is also core to the library stream of the Graduate Diploma Information Knowledge Management (IKM), for professional recognition with ALIA, RMAA, ASA. This unit is available as an elective in all FIT masters and the Master of Business (IT Management).

It addresses issues of Information Technology and Information Knowledge Management (IKM) strategy and governance. It builds on the foundation unit FIT9006 IT Management. A sound understanding of information and IT strategy and governance is crucial not only for Chief Information Officers (CIOs) but for all IT, information and knowledge professionals.

    Synopsis (07 Jul 2020, 6:12pm)

This unit develops students understanding of Information Technology Governance and Information & Knowledge Management Governance frameworks. This is in the context of strategy implementation, the role of the CIO/CKO and the associated human and infrastructure management issues. Governance includes delegation of authority, setting strategic aims, measuring performance, demonstrating value and managing risk. Further, we take into account relevant legislation, organisational controls, audits, standards, and professional certifications. This unit draws on case studies to differentiate strategies focused primarily on people, business processes, and content and the supporting technologies that can facilitate each approach.
