Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:19pm)

This unit forms part of the Business Intelligence Professional Track and deals with the data infrastructure that solves common data problems for modern Business Intelligence systems. This is a new incarnation of IMS5026 Data Warehousing and maintains the intent, syllabus and objectives of the previous unit. This unit provides students with a framework for understanding data warehousing, in particular, focusing on the evolutionary process of developing a data warehouse.

Business Intelligence is a significant and growing area of the information technology industry. Data warehousing is an important component of organisational business intelligence, and knowledge of data warehousing is required of any graduate who intends to work in the area.

Content in the unit is derived from core research undertaken within the Monash Centre for Decision Support and Enterprise Systems Research (CDSESR).

Managerial decision-makers often require information held in various organisational information systems to make improved strategic decisions. A data warehouse is designed to provide high quality data from a number of sources both inside and outside the organisation and is an example of a large-scale decision system. This unit presents students with coverage of several important aspects of data warehousing. These include the purpose of a data warehouse, data warehouse design, data warehouse architecture, data sourcing, implementing the data warehouse, organisational issues involved with designing and implementing a data warehouse, data warehouse governance and case studies.
