This is an optional unit of six units within the Library, Archival and Recordkeeping Professional Track within the the Master of Business Information Systems Program (MBIS) and the Master of Information Management and Systems, the Graduate Diploma in Information Management and Systems, and the Graduate Certificate of Information Management and Systems for those seeking accreditations, recognition from Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) and Records and Information Management Professionals Australasia (RIM Professionals).It will provide students with the skills and knowledge to:

  • Specify recordkeeping requirements relating to the creation, management, and accessibility of records as evidence of social and organisational activity in a range of business contexts and
  • Develop metadata management programs in relation to contemporary and historical recordkeeping systems, including electronic recordkeeping systems and archival descriptive systems.

Reasons for Change (07 Dec 2017, 11:30am)

The workload/contact hours have been changed due to larger class sizes requiring seminar to be replaced with standard lecture and lab (which is combined with tutorial work so needs to be timetabled in studios). Change to be implemented from Semester 1 2012.

7 March 2013 - ASCED code changed to 091301 Librarianship and Information Management

23 May 2013 - Assessment amended to 100% in-semester to align with learning outcomes and reflect how the unit is conducted. Detail to be provided in the unit guide (i.e. 25% assignment task related to tutorial and class discussion and exercises, 50% major case study assignment, 25% Appraisal exercise). To apply from S1 2014.

28 May 2013 - Learning Objectives amended in accordance with changes to FIT3121 to differentiate the cognitive levels. Also amended to 2 hour tutorial scheduled in studio labs as this is a more accurate reflection of the learning activities. To apply from S1 2014.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (18 May 2011, 08:49am)

This is one of six optional units within the Library, Archival and Recordkeeping Professional track in the Master of Business Information Systems program (MBIS) and Master of Information Management and Systems (MIMS), the Graduate Diploma in Information Management and Systems (IMS), Graduate Diploma in Information and Knowledge Management (IKM), and the Graduate Certificate of Information Management and Systems (IMS), which is accredited by the Australian Society of Archivists (ASA) and Records and Information Management Professionals Australasia (RIM Professionals). It replaces IMS5010 Evidence and Metadata and is co-taught with FIT3121 Archival Systems.

This unit relates to the fundamental role of recordkeeping professionals in society - to provide access to recorded information in the form of essential evidence of social and organisational activity for business, commercial, governmental, social, and cultural purposes. It covers the role of recordkeeping in society and organisations, functional requirements for evidence, the formulation of recordkeeping policy, strategies and tactics, the establishment of recordkeeping regimes, business functional analysis, appraisal and disposal, the development of metadata schemas and their implementation in recordkeeping systems.
