Unit Code, Name, Abbreviation

FIT5057 Project management (29 Oct 2009, 6:18pm) [ PROJECT MAN (09 Mar 2009, 1:09pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (29 Oct 2009, 6:18pm)

For the last decade, organisational restructuring, the impact of the computer, deregulation and global competition, have brought about rapid changes in the way organisations are managed. Many of these changes have contributed to the rise of project management. There has been a rapid growth in the use of project management as a mean by which organisations gain their competitive advantages and achieve objectives. Many managers are now required to take on a dual role as a project manager to handle the growing number of in-house projects. This subject is designed to help students understand the role that project management plays in contemporary organisations. This subject will give students knowledge of project management theory and practice and show them how to apply this knowledge to industrial situations.

Reasons for Change (23 Sep 2020, 4:17pm)

This change to assessment has been implemented to address issues raised by students with the implementation of in semester class tests. Therefore the exam component has been introduced and set to 40%. Students had also requested that tutorial contact hours were too short, and therefore tutorial contact has increased to 2 hours. The change is required for semester 1, 2015.

28/01/2015 - Removal of information in synopsis which said that students were eligible to sit the exam for PMP as this is incorrect.

7/12/2016 - the time allowed for the exam has been changed from 3 hours to 2 hours in accordance with the changes occurring to all postgraduate units. As part of this change time allowed for reading is extended from 10 minutes to 30 minutes.

17/01/2017 the learning outcomes are three not four as it was deemed unnecessary for there to be four

07/02/2017 - Admin: reasons from CE for change in number of learning outcomes - the financial focus mentioned balance sheets - our focus is on cost benefit analysis and appropriate costing of the project so the learning outcome was no longer relevant.

14/02/2017 - Admin: assessment modified at the request of the Chair of GPC to remove extraneous material.

12/06/2017: Admin - updating location of offering to reflect actual campus offerings at the ADE's request.

12/09/2017 - Admin: updating Prohibitions as per email from MPM Course Director following discussions with the CE.

10/10/2017 - Admin: updating Prohibitions as per email from MPM Course Director.

14/06/2018 - Removing the exam altogether from this unit: This unit is based on Project Management best practice. By taking an industry perspective.Students are required to not just apply project management skills to complex projects but also engage in business information systems practice to a level of depth and sophistication consistent with senior professional practice in a real world setting. With the current assessment criteria it is not possible to achieve learning outcomes as outlined by the Faculty and the CLO. I therefore believe in not just applying project management theory and methods using a team environment but also ensuring students have an opportunity to engage in individual work practices to a level appropriate with a senior professional in the practice of project management. This cannot be achieved through an exam but through individually assessed components. This unit will not compromise and students have an in-depth assignment which is followed with a tight moderation.

15/06/2018: Admin - effective from Semester 2, 2018.

23/09/2020 - Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:18pm)

Almost all of our graduates will be involved in projects in their working and academic life. This unit gives students an understanding of project management methodology, stakeholders, tools and techniques, software, professional bodies, and current literature. It also teaches students about the financial aspects of projects: valuation of work in process, financial statements, and quotations.

This unit is highly relevant to our students working and academic life. Many organisations involved in information technology structure their business according to projects. Staff members work on one or more projects which have a finite life, when one project ends staff move on to other projects. It is highly desirable that our students have a good understanding of modern project management as this will be their working environment.

Modern project management has evolved into a set of very good methodologies and management methods which all run in parallel but they all have substance and depth and need mastering. This unit presents these methodologies and give our students the knowledge they need work successfully in a project setting.

Synopsis (17 Jan 2017, 3:31pm)

This unit focuses on a holistic approach to project management. It provides students with a high level of understanding of the processes of project management, as well as sound skills in the use of project tools. Proficiency in using key tools and concepts could give students a significant competitive advantage in the market place. The content deals with: concepts and definitions; organising and staffing the project office and team; planning, scheduling techniques; cost control; risk management; contracts and procurement; etc. Case studies, articles of interest that may appear in current media, and students' own work experiences with project management, will be discussed to optimise the learning opportunity in the unit.

12 Aug 2011 Joze Kuzic modified Prerequisites/PreReqUnits The reason for not insisting that all students who want to study FIT5057 have to be enrolled at postgraduate course at Monash is to allow students outside of Monash to come and study this unit at FIT. I had many requests from students from other universities to come and study this unit with us. Up to now I have been allowing that and had to approve each enrolment manually. The procedure is unnecessary and time consuming.
