Re-introduced as a discipline core for Master of Networks and Security - 2014

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

This unit serves as a discipline core in the new Master of Networks and Security course which will be offered in 2014.

18/7/13 - Amendment to prerequisites and prohibitions, effective Semester 1 2014.

22/1/2014 - Change to contact hours made to align with Handbook entry (bulk upload from CUPID extract). Approved by ADE.

11/4/2014 - Exam information added by Director Education Quality on behalf of CE since it was not in the S1-2014 Unit Guide. The exam has always been 2 hours (since S2-2007), but the information has never been in Monatar and the Handbook. Exam hours added in Monatar so that the exam hours can be published in the Handbook.

21/10/2014 - Amended prerequisite requirements by adding 2015, FIT9xxx version of 2014, FIT5xxx foundation units. Approved at GPC 4/14 (Item 6.2).

5/1/2015 - Amendments to prerequisite requirements effective Semester 1 2015.

19/5/2016 - Included Tutorial (flat room requirement) and Lab (for practical and assignment exercises)requirements.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

24/09/2020 Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

19/11/2020: Admin - this unit was disestablished at FEC 5/20 on 12/11/2020 as it is no longer required.

This is one of the core units offered in the Master of Networks and Security. The unit concentrates on software security. It builds on students' knowledge in software programming. It complements units in other aspects of security: Network Security, Information and Computer Security. Security is an extremely important part of information technology; the Faculty must retain its role as a leader in IT teaching and research. Software security is now the number one cause of financial losses. Furthermore, this unit is critical to the Faculty's research-teaching nexus; the Faculty has significant research activity in secure/trusted software development.

On successful completion of this unit, students should be able to:

• Identify the appropriate Internet protocols for a given application development;
• Design client-server applications using the TCP/IP protocols;
• Configure and performance tuning of Internet communications;
• Investigate and analyse the current technology, systems and software relevant to networks in an organisataion;
• Setup corporate networks and manage their network services; and
• Upgrade and install new network services.

In-depth coverage of the protocols used to operate the Internet and intranets, and a selection of major applications, including specific implementations of the protocols and systems. The topics include: Advanced Internet Addressing: IPv6, subnetting, supernetting. TCP Performance and Enhancements: Reno, New-Reno, Fast Retransmit and Recovery, etc. Unicast and multicast routing protocols: BGP4, OSPF, MOSPF, DVMRP, etc. Messaging systems: SMTP, MIME, POP3, IMAP, World Wide Web systems: client-server implementations, HTTP, Real Time Protocols: RTP, RTCP,RSVP. Security and Firewall. Quality of Service issues: DiffServ and IntServ. Network management and Remote File activities.

Need a flat room or a studio type for the tutorials and specialized labs for the practicals. Would prefer booking both type of rooms for the full semester, if possible, although there will be only 3 lab exercises, but the assignments are based on those lab exercises which students need to do on their own time.
