This unit will be offered to the students enrolled in the degree of Bachelor of Radiation Sciences in 2018, second semester.

Its content will be based on the successful Masters unit RAD5106 developed in collaboration between FIT and FMNHS and offered in 2016 and 2017.

The Bachelor of Radiation Sciences will replace the 'Radiation Sciences' specialisation in the Bachelor of Health Sciences.

It is intended that students currently in year 1 of the Bachelor of Health Sciences (Radiation Sciences) will not complete FIT1052 unit but will study the unit FIT3180 Data management for health informatics in year 3 in 2019. The prerequisite will need to be waived for these students.

New students who will enter the new course, Bachelor of Radiation Sciences, in 2018 will complete the two FIT units as part of a revised course structure.

Reasons for Change (07 Oct 2020, 4:54pm)

08/10/2018 - Admin: Updating ASCED code, change of policy means only one code per unit. 21/05/2019 - Tian: Updating workload listed from 6x2h to 12x2 in line with timetabled classes. Change to be implemented from Semester 2, 2019.

23 June 2020 -- updated assessment regime to suit hybrid online/face to face class format and in line with students' feedback

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (14 Aug 2017, 10:00am)

This unit is an elective which meets the needs of the Faculty Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences (FMNHS) for training new generation of health practitioners facing the realities of the era of digital healthcare and in recognition of the health information management becoming an issue for better healthcare delivery into the future. This is a timely initiative to follow the appointment of the Professor of Digital Health and the faculty's strong profile in digital health research.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe their obligations in relation to Patient Health Record Privacy and Security.
  2. Explain how health informatics functions across the wider health domain
  3. Describe how interoperability and integration of clinical systems is achieved through implementation of medical ontologies
  4. Explain how knowledge of ICT terminology facilitates more effective outcomes for users of health services
  5. Critically evaluate the roles and interdependencies of the software applications of health information systems (eg, PACS, HER, clinical decision support systems, RIS, and their relationship with other health IT applications
  6. Distinguish between the various components of the IT infrastructure including Network, Virtual Server environment and ICT support mechanisms.
  7. Apply the principles of Project Management and Change Management methodologies in their work
  8. Analyse Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plans for their Health IT applications

The aim of this unit is to examine the role of information and communication technologies (ICT), systems and hardware infrastructure that underpins secure delivery of the modern health services. Case studies of Picture Archive and Communication Systems (PACS) and Radiology Information Systems (RIS) will be covered more in depth, together with an overview of other health related software applications such as the Electronic Patient Record (EPR), medical classification schemas/ontologies, medical data standards and interoperability. The opportunities that new data analytics and artificial intelligence approaches offer to transform the modern healthcare will be reviewed in practical sessions. Students will also explore project and change management issues and learn how they impact efficiency of medical practice.

This is a blended learning / flipped classroom unit that uses an online learning environment to deliver the unit material via Moodle. The resources each week will provide direction on completing the topic areas, recommended readings, suggested activities, hyperlinks to other web resources and information on the assessment tasks. The unit incorporates formative and summative assessment tasks to gauge and monitor student progress throughout the semester. The activities facilitate student learning through an examination of the theoretical concepts, ICT applications, and principles covered in the curriculum material.

To enable students to achieve the learning outcomes described in the previous section, the course materials have been organised into 3 modules:

Module A Informational Infrastructure

Module B Technology Infrastructure

Module C Organisation design, risk and change management

We expect that you will work consistently and complete all the designated Activities including the recommended readings. remember a 6 credit point unit requires students to spend 6 hours per week of direct engagement in the learning materials provided within the Moodle site and 6 hours of self-directed study for 12 weeks.

There will be cumulative, on-going assessment in the form of tutorial classes on-campus each week that will involve group-discussion and presentation on cases and discussion material.

Assessment

Assessment Summary (08 Oct 2020, 3:34pm)

In-semester assessment: 100%

In semester assessment will comprise a number of activities 25% of which are in-class assessment performed by a tutor/instructor. 25% will be assessed as a class-test.

50% of case-based assessment is also moderated by students' reflections on the material which will be presented in class, which will allow to authenticate their personal knowledge of the material.

Workloads

Workload Requirements (21 May 2019, 5:14pm)

Off-campus: 6 hours per week of direct engagement in the learning materials and 4 hours of self-directed study for 12 weeks.

12 x 2 hour practical tutorial sessions on campus will be offered for hands-on exercises under supervision of a tutor.
