This unit was developed as part of the restructure of the BITS carried out as part of the IT faculty review in 2010. It is a level 3 elective unit in the Enterprise Information Management major and the Information and Communication technologies major of the BITS

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (06 Aug 2010, 6:04pm)

This unit is aimed at final year students who will be entering professional practice in the near future. It aims to improve their understanding of contemporary issues in IT practice, make them aware of the realities of practice, and prepare them for the sorts of issues which they will encounter as IT professionals in the work force.

The unit will address a range of issues taken from across the knowledge domains covered in the Enterprise Information Management, and Information and Communication Technologies majors. The specific topic areas to be covered will vary from year to year. Therefore the unit may require students to call on their knowledge and understanding of a variety of the basic concepts covered in the FIT common core and the core units in the majors.

On the completion of this unit, students will:

  • Know and understand some of the key issues of current concern in regard to the application of IT and IT-based applications;
  • Understand the impact of these issues on the knowledge, skills and attitudes required of IT professionals;
  • Appreciate the importance of their role and responsibilities as IT professionals;
  • Understand the organisational and social issues arising from the use of IT and IT-based applications in organisations;
  • Be able to recognise and analyse opportunities, risks and liabilities which may arise for organizations from their usage of IT and IT-based applications;
  • Be able to carry out an investigation of a case study of IT usage and analyse and report their findings;

    This unit provides students with insights into key areas of current interest and concern confronting practising IT professionals. The unit is based around case studies of organizational experiences with the application of technologies and IT-based applications to meet their information needs. These case studies will be used to compare and contrast theory and practice in the use of IT and IT-based applications, and identify the implications for IT professionals and the impact on their roles and responsibilities. Students will be required to conduct an investigation of a case of current interest and analyse and report on the lessons it provides for IT professional practice.

    FIT1002, FIT1004, FIT1031, FIT2001, FIT2002 and FIT2003 plus 18 credit points of study from core units within either the Enterprise Information Management major or the information and communication technologies major. Students must have achieved an average grade of distinction over their prerequisite study.
