This unit is a successor of CSE2307 - Numerical Computing which is a core unit of the BSc/BCS double degree. It is a third year elective suitable for students in the BCS, BSE and for students taking CS electives in the BSc and other degrees.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:15pm)

This unit is intended to teach students about the design of numerical algorithms and the affect that computer arithmetic has on both the design of numerical algorithms and on numerical software. Students are introduced to main paradigms for creating numerical computing algorithms, namely the paradigm of local approximation and the paradigm of matrix transformations.

The unit requires a minimal programming background such as the common core unit, FIT1002 Computer programming. It assumes a mathematical background of 12 points of first year mathematics with some knowledge of basic linear algebra. The unit is based on CSE2307 - Numerical Computing.

Students that write or use programs that solve numerical problems that use floating point arithmetic need to be aware of the special problems that arise from the use of inexact arithmetic and the effects that the propagation of errors may have on a numerical calculation. The unit also helps to develop the ability of the students to develop and analyse algorithms, particularly since it deals with two paradigms for creating algorithms.
