This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data. The prerequisites have been amended in accordance with the FIT undergraduate degree review, 2010.

SEPT 2015: This is one of two core options in the BIT degree (the alternative being FIT3047 / FIT3048 Industry Experience projects). It is likewise an alternative for BCSAH degree students to their core FIT3153 Research placement (RBL) unit. In the BCS this unit is an elective.

This unit is available to students in the IBL stream of the BBIS degree and to students admitted to the IBL placement program in all undergraduate degrees of the Faculty of IT. This unit provides students with the opportunity to enhance their education in an industry setting utilising skills learnt in classrooms and lectures. The unit exposes students to the corporate IT environment so that their application of information technology in the future will be informed and produce successful outcomes with a high degree of probability.

At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:

1. set achievable and measurable goals;
2. identify useful theoretical knowledge that has been covered in prior coursework and knowledge that has not yet been covered;
3. develop and practice professional skills and attitudes including: initiative, communication, time-management and teamwork skills in a business environment;
4. develop solutions to business problems using information technology and other techniques;
5. prepare documentation and written reports of a professional standard;
6. address performance improvement opportunities identified by industry supervisors and self-assess opportunities for personal development;
7. develop information technology skills (such as business process modelling, performance enhancement of installed software, updating current software and developing new software) in a complex, corporate business environment.

Students on placement participate full time in a 22-week placement period at established partners of the Faculty of IT industry based learning program including major global companies, leading Australian companies and worldwide consultancies. The students on placement apply the knowledge, skills and practices of professional attitudes and behaviour developed in their academic units. They develop communication, time management, self-reflection and customer service skills in business situations, experience and participate professionally in the corporate environment and obtain feedback from experienced supervisors on their performance.

Industry supervisor provided by relevant industry partner. CE and academic nominees for this unit make visits to industry three times per semester for each student placement.

Industry-based learning The teaching approach is experiential learning with active learner involvement in a practical environment. Reflection is used to conceptualise the experience.

Students on placement are deployed full-time for 22 weeks with the industry partners of the Faculty of IT industry-based learning program in a graduate level role within the company.

Available to students in all undergraduate degrees of the Faculty of IT who have been accepted into the Industry Based Learning program with at least 72 credit points including 60 FIT or MAT credit points.

Prerequisite units: One of FIT1045, FIT1053, FIT1048, FIT1051 or ENG1003.

In addition prerequisite units for BCS and BInfoTech students: FIT1049 or equivalent

In addition for BInfoTech students completing the Business Information Systems major: FIT1013

Pre 2016:
