FIT3019 is a level 3 core unit for undergraduates in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems at Gippsland and majoring in business systems.

This unit draws on the knowledge, technologies and tools learnt from the previous units of analysis, design, implementation and maintenance of information systems.

This is a third level core unit for the Business Systems major in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) at FIT Gippsland campus. It is an elective for students in the Applications Development and Networks major. This unit draws on the knowledge, technologies and tools learnt from the previous units of analysis, design, implementation and maintenance of information systems. It is designed to provide an understanding of: the management issues surrounding information technology (IT); the knowledge of management functions and responsibilities necessary for IT managers; and the knowledge to apply IT management principles in the organisational environment.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. describe the roles senior level IT managers play in organisations to align IT function with the business strategies;
  2. evaluate internet-based e-commerce and IT applications to improve the performance of business organisations;
  3. describe the planning techniques used by IT managers to manage and improve IT systems;
  4. evaluate and implement essential IT technologies;
  5. evaluate the benefits and costs associated with IT outsourcing options suitable for business organisations;
  6. explain measures used to avoid IT systems failure caused by security breaches.

This unit provides students with an understanding of the management issues surrounding Information Technology (IT), the knowledge of management functions and responsibilities necessary for IT managers, and the knowledge to apply IT management principles in an organisational environment. Main topics include: Information Systems, Management, Managing Essential Technologies, Managing Systems Development, Managing New Technologies, Acquisition of Hardware, Software, Networks, and Services People and Technology.

Minimum total expected workload equals 12 hours per week comprising:

(a.) Contact hours for on-campus students:

  • Two hours of lectures
  • One 2-hour tutorial
  • (b.) Study schedule for off-campus students:

  • Off-campus students generally do not attend lecture and tutorial sessions, however should plan to spend equivalent time working through the relevant resources and participating in discussion groups each week.
  • (c.) Additional requirements (all students):

  • A minimum of 2-3 hours of personal study per one hour of contact time in order to satisfy the reading and assignment expectations.
  • Additional/Special Timetabling Requirements (29 Oct 2009, 6:14pm)

    One tutorial room configurable to permit varying communications styles, preferably with data projection facilities, for 2 hours per week for each tutorial group. Off-campus learning: 12 hours private study and communicating with the lecturer and fellow students through email, newsgroups and web pages.

    On-campus requirements: there will be one two-hour lecture and one two-hour tutorial per week for thirteen weeks. Normal lecture theatres and lecture rooms with standard AV facilities.

    Off-campus learning requirements:

    Students are required to have access to a personal computer with connection to the Internet. This is a requirement for all students enrolled in the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS) at Gippsland. There is no residential or weekend school requirement.
