FIT2093 is introduced as part of the new 2016 degree programs the BInfoTech in the Computer network and security (CNS) and Mobile communications (Mcomm) majors, extended majors and minors. The unit is intended to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of cyber security and the mechanisms that can be deployed to minimise the risks.

Reasons for Change (17 Sep 2020, 3:46pm)

Introduction for course architecture programs. Effective semester 2, 2017

12/06/2017: Admin - updating location of offering to reflect actual campus offerings at the ADE's request.

1/08/2017: Updating exam hours from 3 to 2 hours as required by new University Examination procedures, effective S1 2018.

07/12/2017 - Updating prerequisites to include the new programming unit.

20/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

4/5/2020: As the MSA course 4307 Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences is in teach-out, the MSA offering of this unit has been re-coded to FZA2093 effective Semester 1, 2021. These units will be managed by South Africa and therefore no separate Monatar entries will be made

As part of Computer networks and security major, FIT2093 will teach students how to incorporate security measures to protect organisations' information systems and their access through the internet.

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. critically assess cyber threats and risks to an organisation's information systems;
  2. implement access control mechanisms to prevent unauthorised access;
  3. apply cryptographic techniques to disguise information;
  4. apply appropriate countermeasures to defend against cyber security threats;
  5. describe the ethical and privacy issues relating to security of information systems.

Synopsis (02 Sep 2015, 3:28pm)

This unit will provide students with knowledge of cyber security issues, and their relevance to the management of information systems in contemporary organisations. Students will learn about common cyber attacks and the techniques for identifying, detecting, and defending against cyber-security threats. Further students will have an understanding of the ethical and privacy issues relating to the security of information systems. Additionally students will be required to analyse and assess recent developments and future trends in cyber security technologies.

The lab environment is built into a pre-built virtual machine image installed on the computing facilities that are already available to students in the labs.

High tech tutorial rooms in isolated network security laboratories

Lecture and tutorials and/or laboratory-based classes

This teaching and learning approach provides facilitated learning, practical exploration and peer learning. The lectures will cover the theoretical concepts of security. The laboratory classes will be used to explore the principles, available tools and operating system platforms. The exploration aims to demonstrate and illustrate the concepts provided in the lectures.
