FIT2002 IT project management (14 Sep 2015, 2:33pm) [IT PROJ MGMT (14 Sep 2015, 2:33pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (05 Dec 2006, 4:29pm)

FIT2002 is a core unit introduced as part of the common core for second year undergraduates in the Faculty of Information Technology for 2006.

Reasons for Change (30 Sep 2020, 1:30pm)

07/12/2017 - Updating prerequisites to include the new programming unit.

27/05/14: Admin - minor change to learning outcomes as approved by ADE.

14/05/14: Objectives changed to learning outcomes for AQF compliance.

These changes are as a result of the 2009-2010 Common Core Review and are effective as of semester 1 2011.

3/12/14: Synopsis and learning outcome revised to reflect IT project management, effective S1 2015

2/4/15: Updated learning outcomes to include communication to projects stakeholders, teamwork, and unique aspects of IT projects that are assessed. Effective S2 2015

19/6/2015: Changing contact hours from 2 hours lectures to 1-hour workshop. (Laboratory hours remain as 2 hours). The lecture is being modified to a pre-class activity (videos, readings, quizzes) and the 1-hour workshop will explore the concepts introduced in the pre-class activity using Peer Instruction. Effective Summer A 2015.

SEPT 2016: Name change for Course architecture restructure. Effective 2016.

15 September 2016: Revised pre-requisites so that students have an understanding of IT systems before they study IT project management. Effective S1 2016. For 2016, pre-requisites will be 24 points of study including a programming unit (this will allow double-degree Education students to complete the unit in second semester of their first-year, as an interim arrangement for 2016 only). For 2017, the pre-requisites will be 36 points of study including a programming unit

15 September 2016 - removed pre-requisite knowledge as it is included in the pre-requisites

2 February 2016 - updated Learning Outcomes following Unit Enhancement review. Effective S2 2016

21 April 2016 - revising first learning outcome following UGPC feedback

20 May 2016 - added Professional practice (FIT2003/FIT1049 or EDF2005 for Education double) as a pre-requisite as students lack skills in team work, ethics, professional communication. These skills are covered in Professional practice units, and it doesn't makes sense to cover them again in IT project management. Effective S1 2017

30 June 2016 - change exam weighting from 60% to 50%. Project Management is a practical skill, and more emphasis and assessment should be weighted on in-semester assignment and project work rather than theory questions in the exam. Effective S1 2017.

October 2016: add SCI2010 as an alternate prerequisite to FIT1049/2003 for double degree Science/BCS students (course 3517) who don't complete FIT1049/2003.

30 March 2017: Adding reasons for Change on behalf of Chief Examiner. Examination hours updated to meet new University Examination Procedures. Effective S2 2017.

16 January 2019: remove Professional practice (FIT2003/FIT1049, EDF2005, SCI2010) as a pre-requisite. This is not necessary as students will be learning these skills (such as team work, ethics and professional communication) in the unit. Effective S1 2019

16 January 2019: Changing Contact hours for on-campus students to: One 2-hour tutorial instead of One 2-hour laboratory. The sessions have always been conducted as a tutorial rather than a lab.

19/9/2019: Admin - updating exam duration to include additional 10 minutes as per University requirement.

4/5/2020: As the MSA course 4307 Bachelor of Computer and Information Sciences is in teach-out, the MSA offering of this unit has been re-coded to FZA2002 effective Semester 2, 2020. These units will be managed by South Africa and therefore no separate Monatar entries will be made

30/09/2020 Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (14 Sep 2015, 2:35pm)

SEPT 2016: This is a core unit in the BInfoTech degree. The unit provides students with knowledge for managing small to medium-scale projects, emphasising the unique nature and attributes of IT projects. Basic Project Management tools and techniques are explored to provide students with skills required to manage their capstone projects.

This unit forms part of the common core for second year undergraduate Faculty of Information Technology students. It is also a foundation project management unit offered as a service unit to any other University undergraduate course, and in particular to the Faculty of Business and Economics Undergraduate courses.

Its key objectives are to prepare students so that they will:

  • have fundamental knowledge and understanding of the issues involved in the successful completion of projects in various industry sectors;
  • understand the theory and practice of project initiation, planning, and execution;
  • understand the theory and practice of monitoring and controlling a medium to large-scale projects through to completion,
  • and appreciate the challanges in managing projects both within organisations and at international levels in which mutiple organisations from various countries are involved.
  • All students need to have exposure to Project Management, as industry is shifting from a function orientation to projects. Project Management is recognised by professional bodies as an essential component of professional development. In particular, this unit will address Outcomes Management(OM) component of the Australian Computer Society (ACS) Core Body of Knowledge by focusing on governance, change management, and overall management of projects involving significant ICT component.

    Objectives

    Objectives (21 Apr 2016, 2:40pm)

    At the completion of this unit, students should be able to:

    1. explain the ten knowledge areas of the Project Management Body of Knowledge;
    2. identify the unique attributes and diverse nature of Information Technology projects;
    3. select, justify and use project management techniques and tools for IT projects;
    4. use the appropriate communication method for different types of stakeholders;
    5. identify and apply the characteristics of a collaborative team member.
