This unit is a core first year unit in the Information Management major of the course 3334 Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems (BITS). Through a critical examination of document forms and information seeking behaviour, this unit introduces fundamental concepts about information, its use by individuals, groups, organisations and societies in a variety of contexts, and the role of information management. It provides students with basic skills in the analysis of various stakeholder needs, and the use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) and Information Management (IM) tools to meet these needs. It incorporates parts of the content of IMS1603 and IMS1102 from the Bachelor of Information Systems.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

This unit introduces students to two central themes in information management: the ways in which information is organised in documents, and the process by which individuals, groups and organisations seek information. This is a first year core unit in the BITS major in Information Management. It incorporates parts of the content of IMS1102 Information use and management, IMS1401 Web-based information systems and IMS2102 Information management in organisations from course 2358 Bachelor of Information Systems (BIS), and IMS1603 Information use and management from course 3323 Bachelor of Information Systems (BIS).

The unit will also be offered as an elective to BITS students not completing the Information Management major.

At the completion of this unit students will have -

A theoretical and conceptual understanding of:

• fundamental concepts of information, and its use by individuals, organisations and societies;
• information creation, representation, storage, access, retrieval, and use;
• the impact of organisational and social contexts upon information needs and uses;
• basic ICTs and IM tools developed to manage information and meet user needs;
• the information-seeking behaviour of users;
• the range of information sources;
• the forms that information can take;
• human computer interfaces to information.

Developed attitudes that enable them to:

• be aware of the role and responsibilities of information professionals;
• be aware of the role of ICTs and IM in human activity.

Developed the skills to:

• evaluate information and its sources critically;
• identify particular information needs;
• evaluate ICTs and IM tools in terms of meeting user needs;
• use basic ICTs and IM tools to create, represent, store, access, retrieve and use information.

Developed the teamwork skills needed to:

• be able to work as part of a team capable of managing information in a range of social environments.
