FIT1006 Business information analysis (29 Oct 2009, 6:11pm) [ BUS INFO ANALYSIS (24 May 2005, 4:17pm)]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This unit is one of the core subjects in the Bachelor of Business Information Systems and covers one of the key skill areas identified by the Bachelor of Business Information Systems Steering Committee.

Reasons for Introduction (01 Sep 2015, 12:07pm)

This unit forms part of the major in Business Information Systems in the Bachelor of Information Technology.

Reasons for Change (10 Feb 2021, 11:22am)

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

On advice from Chief examiner, increased tutorial from 1 to 2 hours as it desirable from a pedagogical point of view to improve student performance/engagement in the unit. Change to be implemented from Semester 1, 2010.

31/8/2015 - Updated for course architecture programs. Effective Semester 1/2016.

15/12/2015 - Updated prohibitions to add new BusEco stats units. Removed some older prohibitions.

19/9/2019 - Admin: update exam duration to include additional 10 minutes reading time as per new University requirement.

03/02/20: Admin - minor amendment to wording of workload activity. Removing mention of tutes and prac as labs are held.

15/09/2020 - Admin: Update to include new assessment and teaching approach fields as per Handbook requirements.

10/02/2021: Admin - Updating Reasons for Change for CE - modified Workload to reflect that tutorials (not labs) are being run in this unit. Tutorials were always run, although historically we needed to call them labs so they would be scheduled in computer laboratories (students use statistical software as well as performing hand calculations in the tutorials).

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (10 Sep 2015, 09:37am)

This unit is designed to give students an introduction to statistical and quantitative methods within a business-related framework.

Objectives

Objectives (10 Feb 2021, 11:23am)

  1. perform basic statistical analysis by hand, using spread sheets and statistical software;
  2. communicate the results of descriptive statistical analysis in written form using appropriate graphical displays where relevant;
  3. analyse the predictability of statistical models taking measures of uncertainty (such as standard deviation and Pearson's correlation coefficient) into account;
  4. critically analyse sample selection and sampling methods;
  5. perform hypothesis tests for the mean and proportion;
  6. identify sources of data such as that provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics, as well as other public domain and private data, such as from market research and polling.
