FIT1002 Computer programming - DISESTABLISHED (13 May 2019, 10:54am) [ COMP PROG (02 May 2005, 11:53am)]

Reasons for Introduction

Reasons for Introduction (05 Dec 2006, 3:36pm)

FIT1002 is a core unit introduced as part of the common core for first year undergraduates in the Faculty of Information Technology (FIT) for 2006.

Reasons for Change (13 May 2019, 10:56am)

13/05/2019 - Admin - this unit is no longer required and the Deputy Dean (Education) has approved its disestablishment.

July 2017: Exam duration updated in accordance with the Examination component to satisfy the new Assessment in Coursework Units: Development and Implementation of an Assessment Regime Procedures, where final exam will normally be 1.5 or 2 hours in duration.

January 2016: Admin - updated objectives to learning outcomes for AQF compliance. Effective immediately.

November 2013: Amendment to campus and semester of offering. After being replaced as Faculty core by FIT1040, FIT1002 is only being offered as an elective at South Africa in summer semester.

This unit has been updated as part of a 2009 review and comparison of data with current Handbook, Syllabus + and Callista data.

Role, Relationship and Relevance of Unit (29 Oct 2009, 6:11pm)

This unit forms part of the common core for first year FIT undergraduate students. Its key objectives are to: develop students' understanding of the computational process; provide students with experience in programming problem solving, develop their skills in design and construction of simple object-oriented programs using Java as the implementation language; build a solid foundation for further programming study and provide an understanding of the role/nature of professional programming practice.

Objectives

Objectives (28 Jan 2016, 08:57am)

At the completion of this unit students should be able to:

  1. Describe the relationship between a problem description and program design.
  2. Explain the management of problems using recognised frameworks.
  3. Explain the sequence of steps that a computer takes to translate source code into executable code.
  4. Summarise the code of professional conduct and practice, industry standards and professional ethics.
  5. Design solutions for programming problems including object oriented solutions using multiple user-defined classes.
  6. Create and test programming solutions using Java.
  7. Edit, compile and execute a computer program and analyse and debug existing programs.

Synopsis (29 Oct 2009, 6:11pm)

This unit will provide students with an overview of programming and its role in problem-solving and strategies for meeting user requirements and for designing solutions to programming problems. The fundamental programming concepts of the memory model, data types, declarations, expressions and statements, control structures, block structure, modules, parameters and input and output will be applied within the context of objects, attributes, methods, re-use, information-hiding, encapsulation and message-passing. Software engineering topics include maintainability, readability, testing, documentation and modularisation.
