CSE9001 was originally introduced as part of the core of the MAIT and Graduate Diploma in Computing; the unit was designed to introduce students to computer hardware, basic networking and operating systems.

This unit may be delivered in the future in partnership with Monash Professional. This redevelopment reflects the new structure for the unit in this context and as part of a possible Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma offered in partnership with Monash Professional.

    Handbook Summary (24 Jul 2007, 12:13pm)

    This unit introduces students to the fundamentals of computer systems and the computing environment, using Linux as a case study of a modern operating system. Topics covered include: CPU, memory, storage devices, peripheral hardware, networking fundamentals, operating systems fundamentals using Linux as a case study, practical Linux considerations including Desktop and Enterprise applications, file systems, shell scripting, client/server applications and system administration.

    Lectures (1 hour/week) will deliver theoretical material.

    Intensive practical Linux sesssions (3 hours/week) will allow students to gain significant industry-relevant Linux experience, with the intention of preparing students for Linux+ certification.

    Teaching Methods Relationship to Objectives (24 Jul 2007, 12:19pm)

    Lectures will reinforce theoretical concepts important for gaining a deep understanding of hardware and operating systems. The practical exercises will reinforce the practical objectives of the unit, allowing students to attain high level Linux skills, with a view to Linux certification.

    Assessment

    Strategies of Assessment (14 May 2008, 2:34pm)

    It is intended that the unit will be assessed primarily through practical exercises with a view to students attaining Linux certification. Students will be examined on the theoretical content of the course through a unit test.

    Assessment breakdown:

    60% Unit Test/Theory Exam

    30% Practical Exercises

    10% Interview conducted by an assessment panel

    Laboratory work will assess the practical objectives of the course, with a unit test assessing the theoretical objectives.
