CSE5302 Digital Video Coding and Compression [CSE5302 DVCC (10 Sep 2004, 11:56am)]

Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

Digital video coding and compression was first introduced in 1992 and has since been offered as a unit in Digital Systems Honours programme and later in Computer Science Honours programme. It became the first in the country to cover advanced topics on theory, principles, techniques and algorithms, international standards and implementations at fourth year level, which were usually covered by masters or PhD programmes in other leading universities in North America and Europe. Over the years, we have witnessed tremendous growth in telecommunications, multimedia computing and communications, digital TV and consumer electronics industries, where digital video coding and compression provides enabling and underlining technology. Unfortunately, many honours or graduate students missed out on taking this subject since it was not officially listed in our handbook in the past. As part of a restructuring of the honours degree, this documentation seeks to expand and enhance this existing area of teaching. It is also expected that this subject will be of great interest to students doing masters courses in the Faculty of Information Technology and other faculties. It can also be made available to honours students in the Faculty of Information Technology and other faculties.
