Change to recommended reading to introduce Prescribed and Recommended texts for Semester 2 2003.Change of prerequisites from BUS4520 and BUS4550 or equivalent to BUS9520 Business Systems A or equivalent.The aim of The School of Business Systems is to provide teaching and research to develop IT related business solutions of a wide range of strategic and operational decision-making problems that occur in every area of business activity. In particular, many businesses have undertaken IT enabled business process re-engineering (BPR) projects under the premise of re-organising or changing their business operations to gain competitive advantage. This aspect of business systems has already been addressed by an undergraduate subject, "BUS3600: Business Case Development" that was proposed three years ago following a request from and consultations with the school's IBL sponsors. The introduction of a subject in the Business Case area to the School's postgraduate students is equally important and relevant.The proposed subject will also cover the requirements of professional practice guidelines set down by the Australian Computer Society - the school is currently seeking professional status for all its courses in the school. Therefore a postgraduate level subject addressing all aspects of the business case area is urgently needed to fulfil some of these requirements of the Australian Computer Society.At present, the postgraduate subjects in the School cover quantitative decision-making and computing subjects addressing specific industry areas such as manufacturing, finance, quality, tourism, service and health care. The proposed subject will cover broader business aspects of industry as a whole whilst focussing on IT, BPR, change management, organisational and ethical issues of the business improvement process.Last but not least, this subject will also address the strong demand within the school's postgraduate students for more business-related subjects such as business case development

The aim of The School of Business Systems is to provide teaching and research for the School's postgraduate students to develop IT related business solutions for a wide range of strategic and operational decision-making problems that occur in every area of business activity. In particular, many businesses have undertaken IT enabled business process re-engineering (BPR) projects under the premise of re-organising or changing their business operations to gain competitive advantage. The unit covers broader business aspects of industry as a whole whilst focussing on IT, BPR, change management, organisational and management issues of the business improvement process. Last but not least, this unit also addresses the strong demand within the school's postgraduate students for more business-related units.

Extended to offshore campuses. Updated regularly to reflect curent trends in business information technology.

Role of Unit (14 May 2004, 10:23am)

The postgraduate units in the School cover quantitative decision-making and computing units addressing specific industry areas such as manufacturing, finance, quality, service and health care. Business Case Development covers broader business aspects of industry as a whole whilst focussing on IT, BPR, change management, organisational and management issues of the business improvement process.

Relationship of Unit (14 May 2004, 10:39am)

This unit is a postgraduate offering that is similar to BUS3600 for the undergraduate students in the school. Postgraduate students explore concepts and the application of those concepts in greater depth taking advantage of their undergraduate knowledge and work experience. This unit complements BUS5502 (Business Process Design) by applying the use of modelling in business cases studied, developed and presented by the students.

This unit makes a significant contribution to the school's vision "To be a unique and world leading School in business related IT teaching and research" by addressing the role of signficant business improvement techniques and methodologies in today's competitive business environment. Collaboration with the school's industry partners supports continuous innovation of this unit.

Students completing this unit will have obtained core knowledge in the area of business processes, analysis, process modelling, process re-engineering, quality management and tools, management of teams and organisations and change management.

Students completing this unit will have developed an attitude of exploration engendered by the opportunity to analyse business improvement issues and work with others with diverse backgrounds and expertise to develop business solutions that benefit industry.

Practical Skills (Psychomotor Domain Objectives) (14 May 2004, 11:00am)

Students completing this unit will acquire skills for analysing and solving business problems, i.e. recognize where problems are amenable to solution, which problem solving and decision-making techniques are the most appropriate ones to use for business case development and basic skills in problem solving in a small team environment and public presentation of business cases.

Students completing this unit will learn basic communication skills by developing business cases in a small team environment and participating in the public presentation of their group efforts.

Unit Content

Summary (12 Jun 2006, 2:47pm)

Lectures will introduce students to aspects of business improvements for adapting businesses to a rapidly changing competitive environment. This involves concepts of business analysis, business modelling (methods and techniques), aligning IT and business strategies, business process re-engineering, change managements and business case development. Practical case studies will be introduced in the lectures to supplement the lecture materials. In addition, students will undertake a business case where they will work in teams to study and (perhaps solve) a particular business problem. Specifically the lecture content are: 1.Business analysis and modelling techniques such as the IDEF family of standards and object-oriented analysis and design techniques. 2.BPR and Change Management within organisations: the concept of business processes, BPR projects (case studies) and their effects on organisations, force field analysis as a change management tool and managing the change process. 3.IT and business improvements: particularly the role of IT in business improvements, business strategies for IT enabled BPR projects and emerging technologies such as integrated business systems; 4.Problem solving techniques such as the 'seven basic tools' (process flows, cause and effect analysis, pareto analysis, scatter diagrams, histograms and control charts) and the benchmarking process; 5.TQM and business Improvements: the TQM philosophy and its role in business case development; 6.Teams and people Issues: team compositions, leadership styles and ethical issues of business case development. Overall the subject consists of two main sections: Business case concepts and case studies - addressed by the lectures, Business Case Development - addressed by tutorials and group projects.
