This subject introduces the IT student to the fundamentals of operational finance in an IT setting.

Role of Unit (30 Mar 2006, 12:11pm)

The role of this unit is to preprare students who may have no or little prior finance knowledge as applied in a computing setting for the business world. In particular, it ensures that students may understand and know how to apply (using computers) the "lingua franca" of the business world:finance.

The subject addresses the strong demand in business and industry for technically sophisticated graduates who are well-versed in analytical and computing techniques but who also understand the rudiments of finance. Students will benefit from exposure to the knowledge and application skills of operational finance using the latest spreadsheet techniques in the context of business and corporate settings.

  1. To understand the fundamental theories of finance.
  2. To be able to apply finance theory to real problems in finance using computing power.
  3. To feel comfortable with applying spreadsheets to the solution of financial problems.
  4. To be able to formulate and solve financial problems using computing techniques.
