Reasons for Introduction

Obsolete Reasons for Introduction

This is an existing unit - this submission is a proposal to add summer semester to the semester offerings in order to cater for the large enrolment numbers. In the wake of Y2K a majority of IT managers have cited Business to Business (B2B) e-Commerce as their next major project. Explosive growth and a corresponding skill vacuum in this area are expected to continue throughout the first decade of the 21st century. In a broader context B2B is expected to bring fundamental, far reaching changes to existing business processes and culture as company IT systems begin to overlap in an attempt to form integrated, inter company supply chains. All graduates hoping to join the Business IT industry will need to understand and appreciate this new, inter-company transparency and its effects.XML and its related technologies are emerging as the lingua franca of B2B. Graduating students who hope to contribute to the technical development of B2B systems will need to have a working knowledge of the more important of these technologies (XML, DTD, XML Schema, XPath and XSLT).In summary, a B2B skill vacuum exists and is expected to persist in the near future. This unit attempts to equip graduating students with a practical, relevant and topical B2B skill set. This unit is being introduced to ameliorate the B2B skill vacuum and increase the employability of any student hoping to pursue a career in Business and Information Technology in the first decade of the 21st century.
